In the Spring of 2018, the Severn Town Club participated with the Maryland Federation of Women’s Clubs and held a local, district, and state Youth Art Competition which was open to middle and high school art students. There were three (3) categories: Middle School Art (Art-1), High School Art (Art-2), and Photography/Computer Art (Art-3). The art was initially judged at the local level (STC Club) with winners proceeding to the District then State levels. The 2018 Art Judge for our local competition was Realist Oil Painter, Joan Essex Johnson. She chose twenty-one (21) entries to be exhibited at the Maryland Hall Exhibit – Place winners and Honorable Mention. Five (5) entries were added for Merit and Exhibit interest by the Committee.
The Severn Town Club is a part of the Chesapeake District of the MFWC, and its forty-six (46) entries this year came from six (6) middle and high schools in southern Anne Arundel County with the support of the Art Coordinator of Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) and the AACPS Middle and High School Art Teachers.
Twelve (12) Place award winners (1 st, 2 nd, 3rd, & 4th in 3 categories) from the STC sponsored contest proceeded to District, winning a 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place and one Honorable Mention. The three (3) Place winners proceeded to the State competition winning 1st Place High School (Art-2), 2nd Place Middle School (Art-1), and Honorable Mention Middle School (Art-1). Separate monetary awards were made by the STC, MFWC Southern-Baltimore District, and by the statewide MFWC.
The selected twenty-one STC entries were displayed at Maryland Hall for Creative Arts. The Severn Town Club held a reception for the artists, their families, friends, teachers and STC members.
